comparison of antitussive effect of nigella sativa with codeine in guinea pig
Authors
abstract
background: the relaxant and anticholinergic (functional antagonism) effects, histamine h 1 inhibitory effect, and calcium channel blocking effect of nigella sativa have been demonstrated on guinea pig tracheal chains. several therapeutic effects including anti-asthma and dyspnea have also been ascribed to the seeds of nigella sativa. objective: to evaluate the antitussive effect of this plant. methods: the antitussive effects of aerosols of two different concentrations of aqueous and macerated extracts as well as an extract of concentrated boiled seeds, codeine, and saline were tested by counting the number of coughs produced 10 min after exposing animal to aerosols of different solutions of citric acid (n=7 for each solution). results: the results showed significant reduction in the number of coughs obtained in the presence of both concentrations of aqueous and macerated extracts, boiled seeds extract and codeine (p<0.05 to p<0.001). the cough number induced in the presence of higher concentrations of aqueous and macerated extracts were also significantly less than those with lower concentrations (p<0.05 for aqueous and p<0.01 for macerated extracts). there was no significant difference between the number of coughs obtained in the presence of all extracts with that of codeine. conclusion: these results indicate an antitussive effect of nigella sativa comparable to that of codeine.

full textStimulatory Effect of Nigella Sativa on Β2-adrenoceptors of Guinea Pig Tracheal Chains
Our previous studies have demonstrated the relaxant, anticholinergic (functional antagonism), antihistaminic, and inhibitory effect of calcium channels of Nigella sativa on guinea pig tracheal chains. To investigate the other mechanism responsible for the relaxant effect of this plant, the stimulatory effect of Nigella sativa on ß 2 -adrenergic receptors in tracheal chains of the guinea pig was...
full textEffect of aqueous extract from Nigella sativa L. on guinea pig isolated heart.
A potent inhibitory effect of aqueous extract from N. sativa on calcium channel of guinea pig heart was found comparable and even greater than that of diltazem. The results may also indicate an opening effect for the plant on potassium channel of isolated heart.
full textThe Relaxant Effects of Different Methanolic Fractions of Nigella sativa on Guinea Pig Tracheal Chains
Objective(s): In regard to the high incidence of asthma and the side-effects of the drugs used, finding novel treatments for this disease is necessary. Our previous studies demonstrated the preventive effect of Nigella sativa extract on ovalbumin-induced asthma. In addition, water-soluble substances of N. sativa extract and methanol fraction of this plant were responsible for the relaxant eff...

Background: Several therapeutic effects including anti-asthma and dyspnea have been described for Plantago lanceolata. In the present study the antitussive effect of this plant was evaluated. Methods: The antitussive effects of aerosols of two different concentrations of Soxhlet and macerated ethanolic extracts, codeine and saline were tested by counting the number of coughs produced due to aer...
full textAntitussive Effect of Rosa damascena in Guinea pigs
Several therapeutic effects including hypnotic, antispasmodic, treatment of abdominal and chest pain and strengthening the heart have been described for the flowers of Rosa damascena. North American Indian tribes use a decoction of the roots obtained from the Rosa damascena plant as a cough remedy and to treat eye problem. Therefore, in the present study the antitussive effect of this plant in ...
